Stellar Waves is a kinetic light sculpture combining the principles of art, science, and design in an immersive experience. Drawing on themes of space exploration, spacetime theories, gravitational forces, and the bold visual language of 1980s graphics, the installation offers a contemplative interplay of light, motion, and form.
At its center is a floating sphere that rises and falls slowly, generating ripples in the concentric rings below. These movements reflect natural phenomena such as the flow of gravity, the resonance of sound waves, and the rhythm of water droplets. Illuminated by LED neon lighting, the sculpture merges futuristic and retro aesthetics while encouraging a slower pace of observation—contrasting with the fast-paced energy often found in illuminated artwork.
The measured pace of the sculpture’s transformation, taking seven minutes to complete, invites audiences to pause and engage more deeply with its motion. Rather than a quick snapshot or fleeting glance, Stellar Waves encourages viewers to take in the gradual shifts and layered details, creating space for quiet reflection and connection.
The installation contrasts the airy, glowing elements of the kinetic sculpture with the solid presence of four large, grounding rocks. This juxtaposition explores themes of gravity and weightlessness, permanence and change, and the interplay of physical and ephemeral elements. Together, the glowing rings and solid forms create a balance that reflects the coexistence of opposing forces, inviting reflection on these dynamics in nature and daily life.
Constructed from lightweight, modular wireframe materials, Stellar Waves prioritises sustainability through its use of recycled components and a design aimed at minimising waste. Weather-resistant coatings ensure its durability for outdoor settings, while the modular design supports ease of transport and adaptability, emphasising longevity and responsible resource use.
Positioned against the industrial backdrop of Salford Quays, Stellar Waves establishes a dialogue between natural rhythms and engineered environments. The gentle interplay of motion, light, and form resonates with its surroundings, creating a thoughtful exploration of connection—between the cosmic and the terrestrial, the grounded and the ethereal.
With its focus on slow, intentional movement and its balanced interplay of materials and concepts, Stellar Waves offers a space for considered engagement, encouraging viewers to pause, reflect, and connect with the forces that shape our world.
