Stalybridge Old Brass Band – Sculpture and Identity Design
Lazerian, collaborated with Stalybridge Old Brass Band, the oldest brass band in the world, on a significant creative project that celebrates the band’s rich history and ongoing cultural impact. This project resulted in a bespoke 3D sculpture crafted from unusable brass band instruments, either donated by the community or sourced from local music stores. The sculpture represents the global influence and interconnectedness of brass band culture, showcasing the craftsmanship and heritage of the band.
As part of the project, Lazerian also designed a new logo and visual identity for Stalybridge Old Brass Band. This new crest integrates historical motifs and vintage aesthetics that reflect the band’s legacy, artistry, and sense of community spirit.

Engaging with the Community
The project was deeply rooted in community engagement. The Lazerian Mobile Studio traveled across Tameside, visiting locals, ex-band members, and friends and family of the band. Through these interactions, the studio gathered memories, thoughts, and insights that informed the design process. In addition, Liam Hopkins visited the band during their rehearsals to get a sense of their vibe and to ensure that the sculpture and visual identity truly captured the essence of the band’s spirit.

A Storied Past
Stalybridge Old Brass Band’s legacy spans more than a century, with notable historical connections such as their association with the iconic First World War song, “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary.” As the oldest brass band in the world, they continue to play an essential role in the cultural fabric of Stalybridge and beyond

A Landmark Celebration of Heritage and Community
The sculpture and the new identity not only commemorate the band’s storied past but also aim to inspire future generations and enhance local pride. Through this project, Stalybridge has set a precedent for innovative, community-centered cultural development, positioning itself as a beacon of cultural sustainability and regeneration.

The Background of the Project
Between 2021 and 2025, a cultural partnership called ‘The Bridge’ was formed to curate and deliver a cultural programme supporting the Stalybridge High Street Heritage Action Zone, funded by Historic England and the Know Your Neighbourhood Fund. This broader cultural initiative featured numerous events, activities, and projects aimed at celebrating local heritage, creativity, and community engagement. Central to the programme was a commitment to forging dialogues around climate change, equality, accessibility, health, and identity through community-driven campaigns promoting slow art, slow food, and slow movement concepts.
Stalybridge was named Greater Manchester Town of Culture in 2022, which further enhanced the town’s cultural identity and allowed for greater collaboration with local artisans, schools, and businesses. Notably, the town is home to Stalybridge Old Band, the oldest brass band in the world, whose rich cultural legacy has deeply influenced local identity and pride.
