Gerald Statement

“Some of my work is about the urban environment. I like to make studies of Manchester, of the buildings and areas that are steeped in history and showing signs of age. But I’m equally fascinated by the natural world, trees and plants especially, although I’ve yet to make much work that reflects those interests. My Gerald is a bit of an attempt to redress that balance. He was designed just after a trip to Grenada, one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. The abundance and variety of palm trees was breath-taking and made a deep impression on me. Hence Gerald’s coat of palms. He’s also a bit of a nod to one of my favourite designers, whose work is filled with natural forms. If you’re not sure who I mean, the clue is in the name.”
