From August 10th to October 26th, 2024, the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre will host an exhibition that celebrates one of humanity’s most cherished relationships: our bond with dogs. Aptly titled A Dog’s Life, this captivating show will tour nationally across the UK, showcasing a diverse range of artworks by international artists, designers, illustrators, and photographers inspired by our canine companions.

Art Exhibition: The Enduring Love for Dogs in the UK

This country has long been known for its profound affection for dogs. This love is deeply ingrained in our culture and history, reflecting a bond that has only grown stronger over time. Dogs are not merely pets; they are family members, confidants, and symbols of loyalty. This exhibition will explore how this deep connection has inspired creativity and how dogs have become an integral part of our lives, showcasing various art and cultural events and exhibitions that highlight their role in providing solace during times of crisis.

Interactive Fun for the Whole Family

A Dog’s Life is designed to be a family-friendly experience, emphasizing the importance of providing a comfortable and enjoyable dog’s life. It offers interactive elements that invite visitors to engage with the theme of dogs. Attendees can:

  • Draw and display their pooch’s “pawtraits”
  • Share personal stories about what their dog means to them
  • Showcase their favorite dog photos
  • Discover what they might look like as a dog through a specially commissioned digital interactive

These activities ensure that the exhibition is not only visually stimulating but also a fun, engaging experience for all ages. We hope that visitors will have an enjoyable and memorable experience.

Lazerian’s “Man’s Best Reassembled Friend” Exhibition

A standout feature of the exhibition is Lazerian’s 3D sculptural work, “Man’s Best Reassembled Friend.” This thought-provoking piece explores the intersection of human connection, technology, and the timeless bond between humans and dogs, while creating a conceptual space for interpretation and reflection.

Crafted from discarded technological pieces and other materials, the sculpture embodies the enduring loyalty and companionship of dogs while juxtaposing these qualities with the pervasive influence of technology. The materials used in Man’s Best Reassembled Friend include:

  • Old Electronics and Wires: Reflecting the omnipresent influence of technology in our lives.
  • Discarded Stop-and-Go Signs: Symbolising the structured prompts to which dogs are trained to respond.
  • Worn-Out Footballs: Evoking the playful spirit and cherished memories shared between humans and their canine companions.

In addition to this sculpture, Lazerian will present a large 3D cardboard version of Gerald, their iconic dog logo. Visitors can add their own designs and artwork to the cardboard Gerald, making it a collaborative and evolving piece.

Spotlight on Featured Artists

The exhibition features a selection of artists whose passion for capturing the essence of dogs is evident in their compelling and diverse works. Each artist treats their subjects with a unique perspective, bringing out the individuality and charm of their canine muses:

Sophie Ryder: Ryder is known for her whimsical sculptures that often feature animals, including dogs, rendered in a blend of mythic and playful forms. Her pieces, such as the monumental “Hare and Hound,” explore the deep connection between dogs and humans through imaginative and detailed sculptures.
